STOCKHOLM -- Metformin may be the shining star rising out of the recent rediscovery of the connection between type 2 diabetes and cancer, researchers here suggested.
This old drug could well perform a new trick for cancer prevention -- and even treatment -- Michael Pollak, MD, of McGill University in Montreal, told attendees at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes meeting.
"If someone had just synthesized metformin in a cancer lab it would be considered a very important scientific development in the context of oncology," he remarked to reporters at an EASD press conference.
However, it's still too early to suggest that cancer patients should take metformin based on largely epidemiologic and mechanistic studies, he cautioned.

Last year's controversy over potentially elevated cancer risk with insulin analogues sparked an interchange between the diabetes and cancer research world, Edwin Gale, MD, of the University of Bristol, England, and former editor-in-chief of Diabetologia, noted at a second similarly-themed press conference.
